European Cup

Until 1996 a European Championship was competed only between the three nations ENG, FRA and WAL (WAL except 1955/56) and additionally an international selection (INT) in the years 1949/50 - 1955/56. Restarting the competition by the RLEF three new teams IRL, RUS and SCO were involved in 2003.
Since 2008 onwards, there was also a second tier (European Championship B until 2013 European Shield) and third tier (European Championship C until 2013 European Bowl) division below the elite division of the top nations (now called European Cup). The winner of the European Cup has the right to participate in the Four Nations Tournament if it is organized in the northern hemisphere.
Since 2003 England as the European powerhouse did not longer participate with its first side.
