Some years after shutting down the European Hockey League, IIHF attempts to establish a European club competition at the highest level again. It was succeeded by the Champions Hockey League, which was folded after one season.

Victoria Cups (defunct)

The Victoria Cup is an annual game played between one or more European teams (determined by the Champions Hockey League or for the 2008 game the European Champions Cup respectively) and one or more NHL challengers. It is a joined venture between the IIHF and the NHL.
The cup is named after the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal where the first organized hockey game was played on March 3, 1875.

Champions Hockey League

The Champions Hockey League is a European ice hockey tournament launched by 26 clubs, 6 leagues and the IIHF, which started in the 2014/15 season.
The precursor European Trophy was a pre-season club tournament organized by Hockey Europe. Hockey Europe is a collaboration of ice hockey leagues within Europe. It was formed by six European Leagues (AUT, CZE, FIN, GER, SVK, SWE and associated SUI) to help negotiate for their rights with the NHL and KHL. It was formed in October 2008.
