FIH - Fédération Internationale de Hockey
Field Hockey is an ancient sport. There are depictions of hockey-like
games from the Ancient Greece and East Asia.
The modern hockey game originated in the middle of the
19th century in England.
An International Rule Board was introduced in 1895, and in
1908 hockey was part of the Olympic program for the first time. But the
sport was not considered for the Olympic Games in 1924 because it
was not represented by an international federation.
This has inspired the Frenchman Paul Léautey
to invite representatives from other 6 countries
(AUT, BEL, ESP, HUN, SUI and TCH) to establish
the Fédération Internationale de Hockey sur Gazon (FIH)
in the same year. In March 1935, the FIH deleted
the words "sur Gazon" from its name.
Parallel the women's hockey grew rapidly. In
1924 at a meeting of representatives from ENG, IRL, SCO,
WAL and USA it was decided to establish a separate women's
federation. Three years later 1927, January 23, in London the
International Federation of Women's Hockey Associations (IFWHA)
was founded by AUS, DEN, ENG, IRL, RSA, SCO, USA and WAL.
On 1983, Apr 23 the IFWHA dissolved, its member federations became
immediately member of the FIH (if not already associated).
This merger was a demand by the IOC to include women′s
hockey in the Olympic program.
