GAISF - Global Association of International Sports Federations
In the early 1960s, it became increasingly urgent to replace the
intermittent meetings of the international sports federation with a
permanent organization emphazing the matters of the IFs in the world of
sports.
Founded on 23.04.1967 in Lausanne SUI by 26 international sports
federations, the
General Assembly of International Sports Federations (GAIF)
brought together the IFs and various other organizations, also supporting
the worldwide sporting community.
On 10.-16.10.1976 at the general assembly, the name
General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF)
was adopted. At the general meeting on 27.03.2009, the organization was
renamed to Sportaccord. On 07.04.2017, Sportaccord
rebranded again to the (old) name
Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF)
at the SportAccord International Convention in Aarhus DEN. (SportAccord remained as a not-for-profit organization by its
stakeholders ASOIF and AIOWF.)

is to serve and represent the common interests of all International
Federations and coordinate the efforts of all those that aspire to become
IOC recognised and, eventually, wish to enter the Olympic Program.‟ (from

An extraordinary general assembly on 29.11.2022 in Lausanne SUI decided to dissolute the GAISF. The most activities shall be
taken by SportAccord in the future. Therefore, ARISF and AIMS will join the present stakeholders.

Union des Fédérations Internationales Sportives (UFIS)
At a conference of the international sports federations on
31.05.-01.06.1921 in Lausanne, the IFs aggreed on establishing a
Permanent Bureau of the Union des Fédérations Internationales
Sportives (Permanent Bureau of International Sports Federations).
This predecessor of the GAISF had the following tasks:
1. To collecte, publish and communicate all facts concerning international
sports relations and international sports federations,
2. To keep the contact to and between the international federations,
3. To register all international sports federations, following the
principle of only one association for each sport. New international sports
federations can only be admitted if they provide enough security and if
they manage sports other than those already administered by member
associations. An international sports federation is an association of at
least five national associations, regardless of state laws, politics, class
distinctions or skin color.
After World War II, the office did not resume to work.
